How to Make the Most of Your Spring Cleaning

March 22, 2018

It’s that time of year where most of us start thinking about spring time and the approaching warm weather. With winter almost gone it’s also time to start thinking about a fresh start for your home. A new season is a great excuse to clean and get back on track for the rest of the year. Here are some tips to get you started!

Make a to-do list. Do you have a mental list of the ever-growing projects in your home? Most of us do. Take a few minutes to sit down and start a written list of things that need to be done. Post that list right on your fridge and cross off task as you complete them.

Do a full-house cleanse. Less is more- as they always say! Choose a day, pick up some trash bags and throw old possessions out (or donate them.) Spring is a great time to get rid of clutter that has been sitting around your house untouched. Doing a wardrobe clean out is also a great excuse to get rid of clothes that you’ve worn a million times. And also maybe an excuse to go shopping for some new additions to your closest!

Try some natural household cleaners. Bring the outdoors in. Cleaning with homemade and natural cleaners gives your home new life. Vinegar, water, lemon rinds and rosemary sprigs makes a great all-natural household cleaner. If the weather allows, open up your windows and allow fresh air to circulate through your home. Also, try some essential oils in a diffuser for some more natural scents.

Try this recipe:

  • 2 sprigs rosemary
  • Peels of 2 lemons
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups white vinegar

In a one quart jar, combine rosemary, lemon peels, water and vinegar. Allow to rest 10-14 days in a cool location to allow oils to infuse.  Strain lemon peels and rosemary and transfer liquid to a spray bottle for use. If desired, lemon peels and rosemary may be placed directly inside the spray bottle. The scent will intensify over time before breaking down and the bottle will look great sitting on the shelf. Take a mental health break. Temporarily put your cleaning on hold. Sometimes the best medicine for a clear head is to go outside and enjoy the weather. This will give you a better perspective on your cleaning once you come back. Take a step outside, go for a walk and take a break from the clutter. Being inside all winter sometimes puts a damper on the cleaning process. Having a renewed sense of perspective will make your cleaning more enjoyable.
